How harmful can football stadiums be to the environment? Many people would say, not much. They are wrong, though. Traditional stadiums require significant energy to power lighting, HVAC systems, and scoreboards. They also guzzle water for everything from restrooms to keeping the pitch green, not to mention the waste generated on busy matchdays.
There’s one stadium that is changing the conversation, though. It’s none other than Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium. While other Premier League venues are still catching up, the Emirates has quietly become the gold standard for eco-friendly football stadiums in England. Here, we’ll explore why the Emirates Stadium is the most sustainable in the Premier League.
#1 It’s Powered by 100% Renewable Energy
Emirates Stadium runs entirely on clean power. Since 2017, it has been powered by 100% renewable electricity. This energy comes from cool sources like solar panels and special anaerobic digestion plants. Octopus Energy supplies all of this green power to the stadium and its facilities. This green switch has made a big difference. It has cut nearly 1,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions in just 3 years.
The stadium also uses super-efficient LED floodlights. These lights cut energy use by a remarkable 30% compared to older ones. Significant upgrades were also made to the stadium’s Building Management System in 2015. This helps limit heating, gas, and electricity usage throughout the venue.
Beyond these measures, the stadium has a giant 3MW battery system. It can store enough green energy to power the whole stadium for an entire match. The club buys electricity when it is cheap, often overnight. It then stores this energy in the battery for use during peak times when prices are much higher. This saves tons of money and helps the overall power grid.
#2 Not a Drop of Water Goes to Waste
Water is precious, and Emirates Stadium treats it that way. It makes sure not a single drop goes to waste. Waterless urinals are installed throughout the stadium. This drastically reduces water consumption. There is a huge 2-million-liter underground tank that collects and recycles water. This recycled water is used for things like keeping the training ground pitches green. The stadium also has a recycled water supply for general use.
How the stadium handles pitch irrigation is remarkable. Instead of using fresh drinking water to keep the grass green, it uses treated rainwater and recycled water from the building’s systems. The irrigation system itself is smart too. It uses sensors to monitor soil moisture and weather conditions, so it only waters when absolutely necessary.
Water fountains are also available everywhere. The stadium offers reusable aluminum cups. Over 40,000 of these cups are used per matchday. This cuts down on single-use plastic waste.
#3 It’s Pitch Is Eco-Friendly

The playing surface at Emirates Stadium is world-class. It has a special hybrid grass system, called Desso GrassMaster. This means natural grass is reinforced with millions of artificial turf fibers. This makes the pitch super stable and durable.
As the pitch features natural grass, it avoids heavy reliance on PFAS, often found in fully synthetic turf. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS, are under growing scrutiny worldwide due to their links with serious health issues, including cancer and reproductive harm.
In the U.S., PFAS contamination, especially from aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) used in military and firefighting settings, has led to widespread legal action. According to TorHoerman Law, lawsuits are being filed against 3M, Chemours, and Tyco Fire Products, besides several other AFFF manufacturers.
Many exposed veterans and workers are now filing Veterans Affairs, or VA claims for exposure to AFFF, seeking compensation for PFAS-related health conditions. Underneath the hybrid grass is a high-tech aeration system to help with drainage and air flow. It can even pull moisture away from the surface, which keeps the pitch perfect in any weather.
#4 The Stadium Actively Promotes Greener Travels

Getting to Emirates Stadium is designed to be as kind to the environment as possible. The stadium is super easy to reach by train and bus. In fact, about 95% of home fans travel sustainably. They either walk, cycle, or use public transport.
Several stations are just a short walk away. For example, Arsenal station is only three minutes away. Finsbury Park and Highbury & Islington are also conveniently close. Transport for London even runs extra trains and staff on match days. This helps fans get there smoothly and reduces traffic. Emirates Stadium is also bike-friendly. There are cycle routes all around the area and secure bike parking right near the stadium. So, fans can pedal their way to the game.
The stadium has also installed EV charging spots in the fan parking zone. These chargers provide 100% renewable electricity. Drivers can charge their cars while enjoying the match. This helps cut down on travel emissions, which is a big deal for the planet.
Leading the League in Green!
Emirates Stadium is a shining example of sustainability in sports. From powering up with green energy to smart water use, eco-friendly pitches, and encouraging greener travel, Arsenal is doing it all. In short, it’s setting the bar for sustainability in the Premier League.
