Arsenal had never faced Coventry City until the September of 1967, when Jimmy Hill’s newly promoted Sky Blues arrived at Highbury as First Division new boys. Coventry’s ‘Sky Blue Revolution’ had just carried the club into the top-flight for the first time in their history and the visit to Arsenal was amongst their earliest fixtures at that level. What followed was 34 unbroken years of Coventry as an ever-present fixture on Arsenal’s First Division and Premier League calendar, right through to the Sky Blues’ relegation in 2001.

That relegation ended the fixture altogether for a generation. Cup Meetings Have Always Gone Arsenal’s Way

Away from the league, the sides have crossed paths in cup competition on several occasions and Arsenal have never been on the losing side. Two FA Cup ties in the 1970s both ended in Arsenal victories and Coventry’s sole major honour, the 1987 FA Cup, was won without the Sky Blues facing the Gunners along the way. A League Cup tie in 2012 gave Coventry their first look at the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal’s home since leaving Highbury in 2006, and the two met again in the FA Cup in 2014.

Coventry’s decades outside the top two divisions after 2001 meant that those cup ties were often the only reminder of a fixture that had once been a fixed part of English football’s spring and autumn calendar. Their return to the Premier League brought a genuinely unfamiliar opponent back to Emirates Stadium, one shaped by a very different chapter of the club’s history to the Coventry side that Arsenal used to know.
