The Gunners haven’t had a huge amount of beef with Bournemouth over the years in the same way that they have against their fellow London sides or clubs that they’ve battled for titles such as Liverpool. Even so, there have been a few big clashes between the two sides and some famous wins for Arsenal. You would be hard-pushed to describe the two teams as rivals in any real way, but Cherries fans are more than happy to gloat on the rare occasion that their team gets one over on the side that once went unbeaten for an entire Premier League campaign. A big part of the reason for that was Bournemouth’s absence from the top-flight for so long.
It took until 2015 for the Cherries to get promoted into the Premier League, with the only previous time that the clubs had met being in the League Cup in 1987. With that in mind, it is fair to say that the sides hadn’t really had much of a chance to develop any serious kind of rivalry over the years. Arsenal were the defending champions in the League Cup when they beat the Cherries 3-0 at Highbury, making it all the way to the final before losing 3-2 to Luton Town in something of a shock result. They also met in the FA Cup in the January of 2020, with Arsenal winning the fourth round tie 2-1 on their way to beating Chelsea in the final.
High-Scoring Games
One of the things that has stood out about clashes between the Gunners and Bournemouth over the years is that they have often been high-scoring encounters. In fact, it took until the October of 2019 for a game between the two clubs to have just a single goal in it. In the first six matches that the Cherries and the London club played against one another, 20 goals were scored. Perhaps the most thrilling of those was the 3-3 draw at the Vitality Stadium in the January of 2017, which followed a 3-1 win for the Gunners a couple of months before and was therefore seen as something of a shock by the Premier League in general.
Most of the high-scores over the years have favoured Arsenal, however. Bournemouth fans don’t like to be reminded of the 5-1 win that the Gunners enjoyed over them in the February of 2019, which was the London side’s eighth straight win in the top-flight, whilst Bournemouth had failed to win away from home since the previous October. It was their ninth successive defeat, during which time they had conceded 21 goals to leave their then-manager Eddie Howe feeling disappointed. They were safe in the end, with the Gunners missing out on the top four, but it was one of the highest-scoring games between the sides.
